From his childhood, San Luis put his main care in fixing his heart to the Divine Law. His mother, Doña Blanca de Castilla, had raised him in the fear of God, repeating many times that she would rather see him dead than in mortal sin. He preserved all his life the grace of Baptism, and amid the cares of the government and the distractions and examples of the Court he kept his spirit pure of all earthly affection, always directing his actions to the greater glory of God. This desire to please him made him resolve to the heroic and glorious action of conquering the Holy Land: and without the many labors that he suffered there tempered his fervent zeal, his desire to reestablish the Faith of Jesus Christ in Africa was further enlivened; on whose shore, consumed more by the fire of Divine Love than by the plague,

God always rich in mercy, who created us out of nothing, and keeps us liberal and pious, did not satisfy the excessive charity and love that he has for us, but by sending us his Only Begotten Son for our Redemption, adopting us as his children and preparing us an eternal happiness. In return, he only wants us to use our hearts to love him only, observing his Holy Law. Our God and Lord, abundant in mercies, who adorn your Saints with the ardent zeal to spread the news of your Name among the Nations that do not know you for your greater glory and the utility of Souls: communicate to us through the intercession of your servant Saint Luis, fervent desire for the conversion of the Infidels, and apply to them the infinite price of torments and Passion of your Most Holy Son, so that converted to You, they may be able to participate in the esteemed treasure of the Sacraments, and united with us by Faith and Charity, also enjoy the eternal happiness that you have promised us. Teach us to venerate your just judgments, and surrender to your dispositions; and because you love us with so much excess, teach us to fulfill your precepts, and direct our works, words and thoughts to your greater glory, for our eternal health. So we beg you through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
