COLLOQUY XXXVIII.

The Bread Obtained by Begging for the Love of God is the Bread of Angels.

St. Francis was accustomed to beg on Feast-days whenever he could, saying that in the poor of Christ this prophecy was fulfilled : ‘ Men shall eat the bread of angels.’ ‘ For this,’ he said, ‘ is the bread of angels which is begged for the love of God, which is given out of charity at the suggestion of the good angels, and collected by holy Poverty from door to door.’
