The 54 day Rosary Novena history

Among the numerous texts and prayers written by Blessed Bartolo Longo, there is the “Novena of Petition”, composed in July of 1879.  Having been struck down with typhoid fever, Bartolo Longo wrote it in order to ask for graces in the most desperate cases.

Every day he went before the Picture of the Virgin of the Rosary to be inspired and to do some corrections. But one day, owing to a serious worsening of His illness, he taught that the only remedy was to take the Picture of the Virgin from the Chapel and place it in His bedroom. Turning to Saint Catherine of Siena so that she would intercede in His favour with Our Lady, he suddenly recovered. Since then, the Heavenly Mother has been granting graces to anyone prays to Her with the Novena written by Her most profound devotee.

In 1894, at Arpino (Italy), Saint Catherine of Siena, represented at the feet of the Virgin in the Pompeiian Icon, appeared to a dying young girl and invited her to recite the Novena and to pray it together with her.  At the end of the prayer the young girl was perfectly cured. The Novena, approved by Pope Leo XIII on November 29th, 1887.

Among the many persons prodigiously cured by Our Lady of Pompeii, there is also the Commendatore Agrelli’s daughter of Naples, to whom Our Lady appeared personally in 1884 and told her: “Whenever you wish to obtain graces from me, make three Novenas of Petition and at the same time recite the fifteen decades of my Rosary and then three Novenas of Thanks”. The young Fortunatina Agrelli made according to the Virgin’s indications and was miraculously cured.

The Novena consists the 5 decades of the Holy Rosary of the day, each preceded by the five prayers of the Novena of Impetration (the first prayer followed by the first decade, the second prayer followed by the second decade and so on). At the end of these first 27 days, continue to recite the Holy Rosary for another 27 days in the same way, alternating the decades with the prayers of the Thanksgiving novena regardless of whether the request has been fulfilled. This is the 54 day rosary novena.

Text of the Novena of Petition to the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary of Pompeii

O Saint Catherine of Siena, my Protectress and Teacher, who from heaven assist your devotees as they recite Mary’s Rosary, come to my aid in this moment and deign to recite along with me the Novena to the Queen of the Rosary who has established the throne of her graces in the Valley of Pompeii, that through your intercession I may obtain the grace I desire. Amen.

O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.

Glory be to the Father, etc. I. O Immaculate Virgin and Queen of the Holy Rosary, in these times of dead faith and triumphant impiety you have desired to establish your throne of Queen and Mother in the ancient land of Pompeii, the resting place of deceased pagans. From this place in which idols and demons were worshipped, you today, as the Mother of divine grace, shower the treasures of heavenly mercy far and wide.

O Mary, from this throne upon which you graciously reign, turn upon me as well your benign eyes, and have mercy on me who am so greatly in need of your help. Show yourself to me, just as you have shown yourself to so many others, as the true Mother of mercy: while I with all my heart greet you, and invoke you as my Sovereign and Queen of the Holy Rosary.

Hail, Holy Queen II. Prostrate before your throne, O great and glorious Lady, my soul venerates you amidst the groans and sighs which afflict it beyond measure. In this state of anguish and affliction in which I find myself, I confidently lift up my eyes to you, who have deigned to choose the land of poor and abandoned peasants as your dwelling-place. And there, before the city and amphitheatre where there reign silence and ruin, you, the Queen of Victories, have raised your powerful voice to call from every part of Italy and the Catholic world your devoted sons and daughters, to build a Temple to you. May you now be moved to pity for this soul of mine that lies here humiliated in the mud.

Have mercy on me, O my Lady, have mercy on me who am overwhelmingly covered in misery and humiliation. You, who are the extermination of demons, defend me from these enemies besieging me. You, who are the Help of Christians, deliver me from these tribulations which wretchedly oppress me. You, who are our Life, triumph over death which threatens my soul in these dangers to which it is exposed; grant to me peace, serenity, love and health. Amen.

Hail, Holy Queen III. The knowledge that so many have been helped by you, solely because they turned to you with faith, gives me new strength and courage to call upon you in my needs. You once promised St. Dominic that those wishing graces shall receive them through your Rosary. Now I, your Rosary in my hands, dare to remind you, O Mother, of your holy promises. Indeed, you yourself work endless miracles in our times in order to call your children to honour you in the Temple of Pompeii. You therefore long to wipe away our tears, you yearn to relieve our pain! Then I, with my heart bared and with burning faith, call upon you and invoke you: My Mother!… Dear Mother!… Beautiful Mother!… Most Sweet Mother, come to my aid!

Mother and Queen of the Holy Rosary of Pompeii, delay no longer in stretching your powerful hand out to me, to save me: for you see, delay would be my ruin.

Hail, Holy Queen IV. And to whom else might I go, if not to you who are the Solace of the wretched, the Comforter of the forsaken, the Consolation of the afflicted? I confess to you, my soul is miserable: weighed down by enormous faults, it deserves to burn in hell, unworthy of receiving graces!

But are you not the Hope of those who despair, the Mother of Jesus the only mediator between God and humanity, our powerful Advocate by the throne of the Almighty, the Refuge of sinners? Then, only say a word on my behalf to your Son, and He shall hear you. Ask of Him, O Mother, this grace which I am so greatly in need of. (Here express the grace you desire.) You alone can obtain it for me: you who are my only hope, my consolation, my sweetness, my whole life. So I hope. Amen.

Hail, Holy Queen V. O Virgin and Queen of the Holy Rosary, you who are the Daughter of our Heavenly Father, the Mother of the divine Son, the Bride of the Holy Spirit; you who can obtain everything from the Blessed Trinity: I beseech you, seek this grace so necessary for me, provided that it be not an obstacle to my eternal salvation. (Here repeat the grace you desire.)

I ask this of you through your Immaculate Conception, your divine Maternity, your joys, your sorrows, your triumphs. I ask it of you through the Heart of your loving Jesus, through those nine months you bore Him in your womb, through the hardships of His life, His bitter passion, His death on the cross, His most holy Name and His most precious Blood. Finally, I ask it of you through your sweetest Heart: in your glorious Name, O Mary, who are the Star of the sea, Our Powerful Lady, the Sea of sorrow, the Gate of Heaven and the Mother of every grace. In you I place my trust and my every hope; save me, I pray. Amen.

That we may become worthy of Christ’s promises. Prayer – O God, by His life, death and resurrection your Only Begotten Son obtained for us the fruits of eternal salvation: grant, we beseech you, that by venerating these mysteries of Virgin Mary’s Holy Rosary, we imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

PRAYERS TO ST. DOMINIC AND TO ST. CATHERINE OF SIENA TO OBTAIN GRACES FROM THE BLESSED VIRGIN OF POMPEII

O holy priest of God and glorious Patriarch, Saint Dominic, who were the friend, the beloved son and the confidant of our heavenly Queen, and who worked many miracles through the power of the Holy Rosary; and you, Saint Catherine of Siena, the leading daughter of this Order of the Rosary and a powerful mediator by the throne of Mary and the Heart of Jesus, with whom you exchanged hearts: O my dear holy Saints, consider my needs and pity the state I find myself in. On earth you possessed a heart open to all the miseries of others, and a hand powerful enough to take care of them. And now, in Heaven, neither your charity nor you power has been lessened.

On my behalf then, pray to our Mother of the Rosary and to her Divine Son, for I have great faith that through you I shall obtain the grace I ardently desire. Amen.

O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.

Here am I at your feet, O Immaculate Mother of Jesus, who delight in being invoked as Queen of the Rosary of the Valley of Pompeii. Rejoicing in my heart, my soul overwhelmed by the most ardent gratitude, I return to you, my generous Benefactress, my sweet Lady, the Queen of my heart, to you who have truly shown yourself as my Mother who so dearly loves me.

In my laments you heard me, in my afflictions you comforted me, in my anguish you gave me peace. Sorrows and the pains of death were besieging my heart, and you, O Mother, from your throne in Pompeii, by your compassionate gaze, offered me relief. Who has ever turned to you with confidence and has not been heard? If all the world only knew how good you are, how compassionate with those who suffer, all creatures would turn to you. May you for ever be blessed, O Sovereign Virgin of Pompeii, by me and by everyone, by humanity and by the Angels, by Heaven and by earth. Amen

Hail, Holy Queen II.

I offer thanks to God and to you, O divine Mother, for the new favours that have been granted to me through your compassion and mercy. What would have become of me, had you turned your back on my groans and my tears? May the Angels of paradise and the choirs of Apostles, Martyrs, Virgins and Confessors thank you for me. May all the souls of sinners saved by you, who now enjoy the vision of your immortal beauty in heaven, thank you for me.

I wish all creatures to join me in loving you, and that all the world repeat the echo of my thanks. What have I to offer you, O Queen, rich in mercy and magnificence? What remains of my life I dedicate to you, and to the propagating of your cult everywhere, O Virgin of the Rosary of Pompeii, through whose invocation the grace of the Lord has visited me. I shall promote the devotion of your Rosary; I will tell everyone of the mercy you have obtained for me; I shall always proclaim your goodness towards me, so that others as well, unworthy as I and sinners, may turn to you with confidence.

By what names shall I call you, O snow white dove of peace? By what titles shall I invoke you, whom the holy Doctors called Our Lady of creation, Gate of life, Temple of God, Royal Palace of light, Glory of the heavens, Holy among the Holy, Miracle of miracles, Paradise of the Most High? You are the Treasurer of graces, the Almighty of supplication, indeed, the very Mercy of God which descends upon the unfortunate.

Yet I know that your heart takes pleasure also in being invoked as the Queen of the Rosary, of the Valley of Pompeii. And when invoking you in this manner, I hear the sweetness of your mystical Name, O Rose of Paradise, transplanted in the Valley of tears to relieve the sorrows of us banished children of Eve; red Rose of charity, more fragrant than all the perfumes of Lebanon, drawing the hearts of sinners to the Heart of God in your Valley by the fragrance of your heavenly sweetness.

You are the Rose of everlasting freshness who, nourished by the streams of heavenly waters, planted your roots in soil scorched by a shower of fire; a Rose of unblemished beauty, who planted the Garden of the Lord’s delights in a land of desolation. May God be exalted, who made your name so wondrous. Bless, O nations, the Name of the Virgin of Pompeii, for all the earth is full of her mercy.

Hail, Holy Queen IV.

In the midst of the storms raging about me I lifted my eyes to you, new Star of hope that appeared in our times over the Valley of ruins. From the depths of sorrow I raised my voice to you, O Queen of the Rosary of Pompeii, and I experienced the power of this title so dear to you. Hail, I shall always cry, Hail O Mother of mercy, immense sea of grace, ocean of kindness and compassion! Who shall worthily sing the glories of your Rosary, the victories of your Crown?

The world has freed itself of Jesus’ arms to become abandoned in those of Satan, yet you make ready to restore it to health in that Valley where Satan devours souls. Triumphant you rode over the ruins of the pagan temples, and upon the decay of idolatry placed the footstool of your rule. You transformed a region of death into a Valley of resurrection and life, and upon the land ruled over by your enemy you established a City of refuge, where you welcome the nations unto their salvation.

Behold your children, spread throughout the world, who raised a throne to you in this place, as a testimonial) of your miracles, as a trophy of your mercies. From this throne you have called me also, among your chosen children: upon me a sinner your merciful gaze has rested. May your works be everlastingly blessed, my Lady: and blessed be all the miracles worked by You in this valley of desolation and ruin.

Hail, Holy Queen V.

May every tongue resound with your glory, O Mary; may the evening hand on to the following day the harmony of our blessings. Let every generation proclaim you blessed, and let all the regions of the earth and the heavenly choirs repeat, blessed are you. I too shall call you three times blessed with the Angels, the Archangels and the Principalities; three times blessed with the angelic Powers, the Virtues of the heavens and the celestial Dominations. I shall proclaim you most Blessed with the Thrones, the Cherubim and the Seraphim.

O my Sovereign Rescuer, may you never turn your merciful gaze away from this family, this nation, the entire Church. Especially, do not deny me the greatest of graces: that I never become separated from you through my weakness. Let me persevere until my last breath in the faith and love with which my soul in this moment burns.

And grant that all of us who contribute to the maintenance of your Shrine in Pompeii, and to the building-up of its charitable works, be included in the number of the chosen. O Holy Rosary of my Mother, I press you tightly to my bosom and kiss you with veneration. (Here kiss your rosary.) You are the way leading to every virtue, the treasure of merits for paradise, the pledge of my predestination, the strong chains binding the enemy, the source of peace for those who honour you throughout life, the promise of victory for those kissing you at the point of death. In that last hour I await you, O Mother. Your appearing will be the sign of my salvation; your Rosary shall open before me the gates of Heaven. Amen

Call on St. Joseph’s Special Patronage

This precious treasury of prayers in honour of St. Joseph is to be prayed for 30 days, commemorating the earthly thirty years which St. Joseph spent in the company of our Lord. St. Teresa of Avila vouched for its efficaciousness, writing “If you really want to believe in it, prove it to yourself by reciting the Novena and you will be finally convinced.”

It takes approximately 20-25 minutes and “the extraordinary graces obtained by this prayer are innumerable“. It is suggested that one be specific in petition, rather than florid and vague. Indeed, listen to Roy Schoeman’s anecdote about the nuns, the potatoes and St. Joseph at the end of his podcast episode from March 2019, linked below.

This devotion calls upon a special patronage from our glorious patriarch St. Joseph and, in order to warrant such a merit, it is suggested that one make additional offerings for the Holy Souls, for whom this devotion is also particularly helpful. One might, for example, pray the De Profundis daily after the 6:00pm Angelus, and/or the Daily Prayers for the Holy Souls. One could also offer daily the Litany for the Poor Souls.

It is said that any missed days may be caught up on the 30th day. So if one were to miss 2 days (not recommended), then the prayers in their totality would be recited 3 times on the final day.

O Glorious Patriarch St. Joseph, I humbly prostrate myself before Thee. Grant, O Great St. Joseph, that the Almighty God may turn a benevolent glance toward me. As the ancient Joseph did not reject his guilty and cruel brothers, but rather accepted them with love and protected and saved them from hunger and death, I beseech thee, O Glorious Patriarch, through thine intercession, grant that the Lord may never abandon me in this exiled valley of sorrows. Grant that He may always number me as one of thy devoted servants who dost live serenely under the patronage of thy Holy Cloak. Grant that I may live always within the protection of this patronage, every day of my life and particularly at that moment when I draw my dying breath. Amen.

Hail O Glorious St. Joseph, thou who art entrusted with the priceless treasures of heaven and earth and foster-father of Him Who doth nourish all the creatures of the universe. Thou art, after Mary, the Saint most worthy of our love and devotion. Thou alone, above all the Saints, wert chosen for that supreme honour of rearing, guiding, nourishing and even embracing the Messiah, Whom so many kings and prophets would have so desired to behold.

St. Joseph, save my soul and obtain for me from the Divine Mercy of God that petition for which I humbly pray.

To thee, O Glorious St. Joseph, come the widows, the orphans, the abandoned, the afflicted, the oppressed. There is no sorrow, heartache or anguish which thou hast not consoled. Deign, I beseech thee, to use on my behalf those gifts which God hast given thee, until I too shall be granted the answer to my petition. And thou, Holy Souls in Purgatory, pray to St. Joseph for me. PRAYER III:

Countless are those who have prayed to thee before me and have received comfort and peace, graces and favours. My heart, so sad and sorrowful, cannot find rest in the midst of this trial which besets me. O Glorious St. Joseph, thou knowest all my needs even before I set them forth in prayer. Thou knowest how important this petition is for me. I prostrate myself before thee as I sigh under the heavy weight of the problem which confronts me.

There is no human heart in which I can confide my sorrow; and even if I should find a compassionate creature who would be willing to assist me, still he would be unable to help me. Only thou can help me in my sorrow, St. Joseph, and I beg thee to hear my plea.

Has not St. Teresa left it written in her dialogues that the world may always know “Whatever you ask of St. Joseph, you shall receive.”

O St. Joseph, comforter of the afflicted, have pity on my sorrow and pity on those Poor Souls who place so much hope in their prayers to thee. Amen.

O Sublime Patriarch St. Joseph, because of thy perfect obedience to God, thou mayest intercede for me.

For thy holy life full of grace and merit, hear my prayer.

For thy seven joys, console me.
From all harm of body and soul, deliver me.
From all danger and disaster, save me.

O Glorious St. Joseph, countless are the graces and favours which thou hast obtained for afflicted souls. Illness of every nature, those who are oppressed, persecuted, betrayed, bereft of all human comfort, even those in need of their life bread — all who imploreth thy powerful intercession are comforted in their affliction.

Do not permit, O dearest St. Joseph, that I alone be the only one of all who hast appealed to thee, to be denied this petition which I so earnestly beg of thee. Show thy kindness and generosity even to me, that I may cry out in thanksgiving, “Eternal glory to our Holy Patriarch St. Joseph, my great protector on earth and the defender of the Holy Souls in Purgatory.” Amen.

Section III: Invocations to St. Joseph

i) Remember O most chaste spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, my good protector St. Joseph, that never was it known that anyone who came to thy protection, and sought thy intercession was left unaided. Confidently I prostrate myself before thee and fervently beg for thy powerful intervention. O foster-Father of our dear Redeemer, despise not my petition, but in thy mercy, hear and answer me. Amen.

ii) Glorious St. Joseph, spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary and virginal father of Jesus, look upon me and watch over me; lead me on the path of sanctifying grace; take heed of the urgent needs which I now beg thee to envelop within the folds of thy fatherly cloak. Dismiss those obstacles and difficulties standing in the way of my prayer and grant that the happy answer to my petition may serve for the greater glory of God and my eternal salvation. As a pledge of my undying gratitude, I promise to spread the word of thy glory while offering thanks to the Lord for having so blessed thy power and might in heaven and earth. Amen.

Look upon me as one of thy children; defend me from the treachery of my enemies, invisible or otherwise, assist me at all times in all my necessities; console me in the bitterness of my life, and especially at the hour of my death. Reparation for Priests and Bishops

“Between the porch and the altar the priests the Lord’s ministers, shall weep, and shall say: Spare, O Lord, spare thy people: and give not thy inheritance to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them.” – Joel 2:17

Every priest who recites the traditional breviary reads these words each night at Vespers on the ferias of Lent. It is a sobering reminder to each priest of one of his most essential duties, namely, to be an intermediary, and intercessor between God and the people. The priest is deputed by God, to offer prayer and sacrifice for the benefit of the living and the dead and thereby plead for the remission of their sins. “Between God and man the priest stands, by communicating to us God’s benefits, and by offering Him our petitions; he reconciles the angry Lord, and wards from us the blows of his justice” (St. John Chrysostom). By his prayers, his labors, his sacrifices, and most especially by offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the priest cooperates with Almighty God in His greatest work, the work of the salvation of souls. St. Thomas says, “The good of grace in one is greater than the good of nature in the whole universe” (S.T. Ia-IIae 113 Art. 9). Through each Mass he offers, each sacrament he administers, along with all of his other prayers, sufferings and apostolic labors he offers in union with his daily Mass, the priest acts as a conduit pouring into the souls of men the greatest gift God has to offer: the graces Our Lord Jesus Christ won for us all on the cross. Therefore, St. Paul says of priests, “We are God’s coadjutors.” 1 Corinthians 3:9.

In order to effectively fulfill their role as intermediaries on behalf of the people in the sight of God, priests must be holy. “Those that are mediators between God and the people must shine before God with a good conscience, and with a good reputation before men” (St. Thomas Aquinas). St.  Gregory Nazianzen says, “The priest must first be cleansed before he can cleanse others; he must first himself approach God before he can lead others to him; he must first sanctify himself before he can sanctify others; he must first be himself a light before he can illumine others.” Holiness, sanctity, that perfect union of the soul with God, is not a luxury of priestly life, it is one of its most basic necessities.  As St. Thomas Aquinas teaches, “In order to exercise this office (of the priesthood) in a worthy manner, interior perfection is required.”

Yet, how far from this most basic requirement has the state of the priesthood fallen, especially in recent years! And not just among the rank-and-file priests but even within the highest levels of the clergy: bishops, cardinals and even the Pope himself. When the topic of clerical corruption is discussed, the clerical sex abuse scandal of the last 20 years most often takes center stage. The recent revelation of the scandals of former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick has added new fuel to the fire. Yet, these horrifying sins against God and neighbor are just the tip of the iceberg of moral rot which is plaguing the Catholic priesthood.

Along with the sex abuse scandals there is a more foundational problem which has also become more apparent in recent years. That is the breakdown of supernatural faith and charity. Priests and bishops are called to be teachers of the Gospel of Christ, teaching by word and example the way to eternal life. Almighty God, through the words of St. Paul to Timothy, says to each priest and bishop, “I charge thee before God and Jesus Christ, who shall judge the living and the dead…preach the word, be instant in season, out of season: reprove, entreat rebuke in all patience and doctrine.” Sadly, many priests and bishops fall into the category of those mentioned by St. Paul in the same letter who “will not endure sound doctrine; but, according to their own desires…heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears” and “turn away their hearing from the truth” and are “turned unto fables.” (1Timothy 4:1-4). Instead of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the teachings of His Church, too many priests and bishops of our day preach a different gospel: they preach the gospel of divorce and remarriage, the devotion of frequent Holy Communion for public and manifest enemies of God and His Church, the promotion of the vocations of women priests, the blessing and support of homosexual marriage and family life, they even perform solemn idolatrous liturgy in the Vatican itself. All this in addition to a general spirit of religious indifferentism which suffocates the apostolic spirit which burned so brightly in the hearts of the great missionary saints of old. It is little wonder then why so many of our churches and Catholic schools, once full of parishioners and students, are now closed and abandoned.

These sins are not only grievous in themselves, but they also cause scandal and confusion among the faithful. St. Alphonsus Liguori, in his book, Dignities and Duties of the Priest, describes the seriousness of the sin of scandal among the clergy. He says, “The priest is called the salt of the earth and the light of the world. The office of salt is to preserve soundness and prevent putrefaction, and the office of the priest is to preserve souls in the grace of God. What, says St. Augustine, shall become of the people if the priest does not perform the office of salt. Then the saint proceeds to say, this salt shall be fit only to be cast away by the Church, and to be trodden by all. But what, if, instead of being a preservative, this salt be employed in producing and promoting corruption? If instead of bringing souls to God, a priest is occupied in leading them to perdition, what punishment shall he deserve?

“The priest is the light of the world. Hence, says St. John Chrysostom, he should shine with the splendor of his sanctity so as to enlighten all others to imitate his virtues. But should this light be changed into darkness, what must become of the world? Shall it not be brought to ruin? says St. Gregory…This is conformable to the words of the Prophet Osee: And there shall be like people like priest.”

It doesn’t take much reflection upon the current moral state of clergy, the Church and the culture to realize the sobering truth of these words written over 250 years ago. “What shall become of the people if the priest does not perform the office of salt…if instead of being a preservative, this salt be employed in producing and promoting corruption…if instead of bringing souls to God, a priest is occupied in leading them to perdition, what punishment shall he deserve?” “The priest is the light of the world…But should this light be changed into darkness, what must become of the world? Shall it not be brought to ruin?” “And there shall be like people, like priest.”

To make matters worse, these very priests and bishops who have perpetrated some of the most heinous crimes against God, are the very ones who, according to the Prophet Joel, are appointed by God to intercede on our behalf and offer sacrifice and reparation for the sins of mankind. “Between the porch and the altar the priests, the Lord’s ministers, shall weep, and shall say: Spare, O Lord, spare the people.” But if the very priests appointed by God to intercede for us and offer prayers, sacrifice, and reparation for sin are the same ones who are committing some of the most grievous sins against Him, how can proper reparation be made? St. Augustine said that the barking of dogs is more pleasing to God than the prayers of bad priests. How can a priest intercede on behalf of sinners when he himself is an enemy of God? Our Lady of Fatima said that many souls go to hell because no one is willing to offer prayers and sacrifices for sinners. How can sufficient reparation be offered to God to save the  souls of priests and bishops who have fallen from such a height and who are buried beneath the sins of  those who are lost because of them?

The first thing which must be done is that each and every priest and bishop reflect seriously upon his great responsibility for the salvation of souls. The priest is ordained for no other reason than the salvation of others and thereby will save his own soul. “For every high priest taken from among men, is ordained for men in the things that appertain to God.” (Hebrews 5:1). “He must know that he who causeth a sinner to be converted from the error of his way, shall save his soul from death and shall cover a multitude of sins.” (James 5:20). A priest’s salvation depends on the salvation of others. To do this well, the priest must not only be holy and devout, he must be a saint.

But the sad reality is that so many priests and bishops are anything but holy and devout. How can sufficient reparation possibly be made for their grievous sins?

The most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass wherein Our Lord’s Body and Blood is offered to God the Father through the ministry of the priest under the appearance of bread and wine, is the only means which can possibly expiate the outrages so many priests and bishops have committed against Our Lord’s Sacred Heart and Our Lady’s Immaculate and Sorrowful Heart. By the special application of Our Lord’s Precious Blood and the merits He won for us on the cross through the devout offering of Masses of reparation, the graces necessary will be applied, not only to expiate such crimes but also convert their perpetrators.

Therefore, I ask all priests and bishops of good will, to offer two Masses each month for the intention of reparation for the sins of their brother priests and bishops. One of these Masses will be in reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the other will be in reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Lay faithful, I ask you to request your parish priests, and/or priests of religious orders to offer two Masses each month for this intention. Attend Mass twice each month and offer your attendance at Mass along with your Holy communion for these same intentions of reparation for the sins of priests and bishops to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. If all devout priests, bishops, and lay faithful alike were to take up this simple yet profound act of charity towards Our Lord, His Church, and His friends who have betrayed Him, Our Lord will be consoled, the Church will be restored, and many souls will be saved from eternal ruin.

Obtain for me, also, dearest Mother, the grace that I may imitate thee and become more like to thee in the practice of the virtues of humility, obedience, purity, poverty, submission to the will of God, and charity. 9 Day Consecration to Mary by St Maximilian Kolbe

NINE DAY PREPARATION

FOR UNLIMITED CONSECRATION

As one prepares for unlimited Marian Consecration the number of days, per se, are not important but rather the disposition of one’s heart, seeking to reach into the very depths of oneself, as it were, to knowingly and willingly offer mind, heart and will to the Immaculate. Our disposition is directly, in most cases, made more or less generous depending on our understanding, which allows us to consent to offering a sacrifice of ourselves for the love of someone else, and just as one cannot love what one does not know, so to one does not normally give totally of oneself without some understanding of what and to whom they are giving.

St. Maximilian teaches rightly that the words, or the formula of consecration, are of small significance What is important is the desire to offer oneself as a limitless oblation to the Immaculate as Her “property and possession.”  The words and formula are meant to assist us in this.

The Marian Consecration of St. Maximilian Kolbe is distinguished from the teaching of Saint Louis Grignion [de Montfort] especially on account of what lies behind it:

  • Not just the “Franciscan thesis,” but also the dogma of the Immaculate, with all its practical and theoretical consequences.

  • The universal end of “sanctificationem omnium” [sanctification of all],

  • The universal Mediation of the Immaculate,

  • The need to win the whole world over to the Immaculate.” (n. 796)

St John Eudes on Bad & Good Priests

In his book ‘The Priest: His Dignity and Obligations’ St John Eudes wrote that God permits bad priests as a sign that He is thoroughly angry with His people. In Chapter 11, Qualities of a Priest St John Eudes writes:

Bad priests are a sign of God’s anger

‘THE MOST EVIDENT MARK of God’s anger and the most terrible castigation He can inflict upon the world are manifested when He permits His people to fall into the hands of clerics’ who are priests more in name than in deed, priests who practice the cruelty of ravening wolves rather than the charity and affection of devoted shepherds.

Instead of nourishing those committed to their care, they rend and devour them brutally. Instead of leading their people to God, they drag Christian souls into hell in their train. Instead of being the salt of the earth and the light of the world, they are its innocuous poison and its murky darkness.

St. Gregory the Great says that priests and pastors will stand condemned before God as the murderers of any souls lost through neglect or silence. Tot occidimus, quot ad mortem ire tepidi et tacentes videmus. Elsewhere St. Gregory asserts that nothing more angers God than to see those whom He set aside for the correction of others, give bad example by a wicked and depraved life.’

Instead of preventing offenses against His Majesty, such priests become themselves the first to persecute Him, they lose their zeal for the salvation of souls and think only of following their own inclinations. Their affections go no farther than earthly things, they eagerly bask in the empty praises of men, using their sacred ministry to serve their ambitions, they abandon the things of God to devote themselves to the things of the world, and in their saintly calling of holiness, they spend their time in profane and worldly pursuits.

When God permits such things, it is a very positive proof that He is thoroughly angry with His people, and is visiting His most dreadful anger upon them. That is why He cries unceasingly to Christians, “Return, 0 ye revolting children . . . and I will give you pastors according to my own heart” (Jer. 3, 14-15). Thus, irregularities in the lives of priests constitute a scourge visited upon the people in consequence of sin.’

Good priests are a sign of God’s mercy

St John Eudes then goes on to examine the signs of good priests, and their value in God’s sight. Here is a selection of some of the qualities of God priests that are particularly needed in these times, which are a sign of divine grace:

On the other hand, the greatest effect of God’s mercy, the most precious grace He bestows upon mankind, is to send worthy priests, men after His own heart, seeking only His glory and the salvation of souls. The greatest blessing that God bestows upon a church, the most signal manifestation of divine grace, is to have a saintly shepherd, be he bishop or priest. This is indeed the grace of graces and the most priceless of all gifts for it includes within itself every other blessing and grace. What is a priest after God’s heart? He is an inestimable treasure containing an immensity of good things.

‘He is an ever burning and shining light set in the candelabra of Mother Church, burning before God and shining before men: burning in his own love for God, shining by his charity for his fellow man; burning with the perfection of his inner life, shining by the perfection of his exterior deportment; burning in fervent prayer for his people, shining by his preaching of the word of God.

The priest is a sun cheering the world by his presence and bearing. He brings heavenly blessings into every heart. He dispels the ignorance and darkness of error and radiates on every side bright beams of celestial light. He extinguishes sin and gives life and grace to the multitudes. He imparts new life to the weak, inflames the lukewarm, fires more ardently those who are aglow with the sacred flame of divine love.

He is an angel purifying, illuminating and perfecting the souls that God has entrusted to him. He is a seraph sent by God to teach men the science of salvation which is concerned only with knowing and loving Almighty God and His Divine Son, Jesus Christ. The priest is an archangel and a prince of the heavenly militia, waging constant war against the devil who strives to drag countless souls into the depths of hell.

He is a captain in the mighty army of God, always ready to battle for the glory of God and the defense of Holy Mother Church. He is ever prepared to lay siege to the world, the flesh and the devil. For him the conquest of kingdoms means only the salvation of souls for each soul is a kingdom more precious than all the empires of the world.
